If Gurye’s sansuyu blossoms offered yellow comfort beneath the slopes of Jirisan, then the spring in Hadong, just a little farther south along the Seomjin River, delivers something entirely different: a heart-racing pink exhilaration.
By late March, the five-kilometer stretch of road connecting Hwagae Market to the thousand-year-old temple Ssanggyesa Temple transforms into the most romantic tunnel imaginable. This is Hadong Simni Cherry Blossom Road, widely regarded as the ultimate cherry blossom destination in Korea.
This is not merely a road lined with flowers. Officially selected by the Korean government as one of the “100 Most Beautiful Roads in Korea”, it is celebrated for its poetic scale and emotional impact. Planted in 1931 to commemorate the opening of the road, more than 1,200 cherry trees—now over a century old—have grown into towering giants whose branches interlock overhead, forming a continuous arch of blossoms.
Visit during peak bloom, typically from around March 25 through early April, and reality itself seems to dissolve. Look up, and there is no blue sky—only soft pink clouds of petals suspended above you.
This road is also known as “The Wedding Road.” A beloved Korean legend says that if a couple walks this ten-ri (simni) cherry blossom road hand in hand, they will grow old together in happiness.
To make the most beautiful promise on the most beautiful road in Korea—this alone is reason enough to be here in the spring of 2026.
Scene: What You Will See
Simni Cherry Blossom Road is not just a floral experience. It is a layered landscape: century-old cherry trees overhead, and emerald-green tea fields unfurling below.

(1) A Pink Tunnel That Erases the Sky
The moment you pass Hwagae Market and turn toward Ssanggyesa, the sky vanishes. Massive cherry trees on both sides of the road reach across the pavement, their branches touching to form a natural roof.
The Atmosphere
Sunlight filters through thousands of petals, bathing the road in a soft pink glow. When the breeze rises, petals fall like snow. Koreans call this phenomenon “kkot-bi” — flower rain.
Walking Tip
During festival season, traffic is heavy and pedestrians must stay along the roadside. To allow safe viewing, wooden viewing platforms are installed at key points. Stop here to admire and photograph the combination of blossoms and the nearby stream without risk.
(2) The Legendary One-Way Road
This is the true climax of Simni Cherry Blossom Road. Near Hwagae Middle School, the road narrows and becomes one-way. Here, the cherry trees press even closer together, creating an unbroken pink ceiling overhead.
The Light
Spring sunlight passes through countless layers of petals, softening everything it touches. The effect resembles a natural soft-focus filter, turning the world gently pink and dreamlike.
The Touch
Branches hang low. Open a car window and you may feel petals brushing your fingertips. If you are in a convertible or a car with a sunroof, cherry blossom rain may fall directly into your seat—a moment that feels nothing short of magical.
(3) A Green Pause Across the Stream: Wild Tea Fields
Alongside the road, across Hwagaecheon Stream, slopes of vivid green tea fields appear like velvet carpets. Hadong is the birthplace of Korean tea cultivation, where tea trees were first planted over 1,200 years ago.
Photo Spot
From the cherry blossom tunnel, look across the stream toward the tea fields. The contrast—Green (tea) + Pink (blossoms) + Blue (sky)—creates one of the most striking color compositions in Korean spring photography. You may also cross the bridge to explore the tea fields up close.
Taste: Tasting Spring(Gastronomy)
Hadong’s cuisine reflects the gifts of the Seomjin River and the foothills of Jirisan. Near Hwagae Market, you’ll find some of spring’s most memorable flavors.
(1) A Spring-Only Delicacy: Cherry Blossom Oysters
Available only during cherry blossom season, these oversized oysters are harvested from the Seomjin River estuary.
“River oysters?” Yes—and they are surprisingly delicate. Compared to sea oysters, they are less briny, cleaner in taste, and wonderfully mild.
Where to Eat
Try them at the street tent bars lining the river near the entrance to the cherry blossom road or around Hwagae Market. Grilled over charcoal until they open naturally, they are best enjoyed dipped lightly in cho-gochujang.
Important Tip
Street tents may not accept cards. Bring cash.
(2) A Clear Taste of the River: Jaecheop-guk (Clam Soup)
Restaurants near Hwagae Market serve refreshing bowls of jaecheop-guk, made from tiny freshwater clams native to the Seomjin River.
Recommended Restaurant:
Joyang Sutbul Galbi
Though known as a barbecue restaurant, locals swear by its clam soup.
Must-Order
- Jaecheop-guk – A clear broth filled with nail-sized clams and cooked with chives. Light, clean, and deeply restorative.

Nearby Attractions
(1) A Symbol of Harmony: Hwagae Market
The starting point of the cherry blossom road, Hwagae Market is more than a marketplace. Situated on the historic boundary between Jeolla-do and Gyeongsang-do, it has long been a place where people from both regions gathered to trade—and connect.
The Song
The famous Korean singer, Jo Young-nam, immortalized the market in his hit song “Hwagae Market,” whose lyrics describe a place that “has everything you need, and nothing you don’t.”
Must-Eat
Snack your way through the market with freshly fried twisted donuts or millet pancakes filled with sweet red beans.

(2) A Thousand Years of Quiet: Ssanggyesa Temple
At the end of the cherry blossom road stands Ssanggyesa Temple, founded in 722 CE. Home to a stone stele inscribed by the great Silla scholar Choi Chi-won and a stately main hall, it offers a serene counterbalance to the exuberant blossoms.
Vibe
After the emotional intensity of the cherry tunnel, this forest temple allows your heart to settle into calm.

Festival: Hwagae Market Cherry Blossom Festival
Timed with peak bloom, the festival typically runs from late March (around March 27) through early April. In 2026, early blossoms may bring festivities as early as around March 20.
Festival Highlights
- Traditional performances and guest concerts
- Cherry blossom singing contests
- Hands-on cultural experience booths
Night Walk (Romantic Illumination)
Night lighting operates throughout the bloom period, from sunset until 11:00 PM or midnight. Walking through the illuminated cherry tunnel at night offers an entirely different, dreamlike experience. Don’t miss it with someone you love.
