The red plum tree located next to Gakhwangjeon Hall in Hwaeomsa is known to be over 400 years old. In recognition of its overwhelming presence and historical value, it was officially designated as a National Natural Heritage Natural Monument in January 2024!
Since the national heritage designation number system has been abolished in Korea, instead of a ranking number, it is now called by its unique and beautiful official name, ‘Natural Monument Gurye Hwaeomsa Hwaeommae’. Surrounding the massive plum tree standing tall against the backdrop of grand traditional pavilions, pink wishing ribbons carrying the earnest hopes of visitors are hung in rows, creating a beautifully romantic atmosphere.

Hwaeomsa’s red plum blossoms are so intensely red that they almost look dark red, earning them the nickname ‘Heungmae (Black Plum)’. From mid-to-late March, when this Heungmae reaches its peak, a spectacular scene unfolds as countless photographers and spring sightseers from all over the country rush to Hwaeomsa to capture its mesmerizing beauty in harmony with the ancient temple.
