Thrill of Winter Fishing: The Pyeongchang Trout Festival

If you want to experience the true spirit of a Korean winter, the Pyeongchang Trout Festival is an event you simply can’t miss. Every year from late December to late January, the clear waters of the Odaecheon River in Pyeongchang freeze solid, creating the perfect stage for one of Korea’s most beloved winter pastimes—ice fishing. Both locals and visitors flock here to enjoy this seasonal highlight. Even beginners can easily take part and the unforgettable experience of tasting freshly caught trout on the spot will stay with you long after the trip.

The Highlights of the Festival

Ice Fishing Excitement
The main attraction is, of course, ice fishing. Anglers drill holes into the thick ice and drop their lines in, waiting for the thrilling tug of a trout. Fishing equipment is available for rent on-site, and friendly locals are happy to show beginners the ropes—so there’s no need to worry if it’s your first time.

Fresh Trout Dishes
The fun doesn’t end once you’ve caught your fish. Visitors can enjoy their freshly caught trout prepared right on the spot—either as sashimi, with its tender and chewy texture, or grilled, which brings out a savory, smoky flavor. The freshness is unmatched, offering a taste you won’t find even in fine dining restaurants.

Winter Activities for All Ages
In addition to fishing, families can enjoy sledding and bobsled rides at the snow playground or go skating on the ice. With plenty of outdoor activities, it’s an event where everyone can find their own kind of winter fun.
