Inside Korea: What to Do in Korea? At a Jjimjilbang

Jjimjilbang: Korea’s Unique Bathhouse Culture

A jjimjilbang is a representative cultural space of Korea for relaxation and recharging, moving beyond a space for washing the body. In a form that combines warm saunas, various jjimjilbang rooms, and spacious relaxation areas, it provides a unique experience that can only be seen in Korea.

The origin of jjimjilbang started from ‘Ondol,’ Korea’s traditional heating method. The ondol culture of warming the floor naturally developed into a relaxation space using heat, and afterwards, it merged with public bathhouses and established itself in the form of today’s jjimjilbang.

Especially since the 1990s, as city life became busier, jjimjilbang developed into a complex relaxation space operated 24 hours a day. It became a space where dining, resting, and even sleeping are possible, moving beyond a simple bath facility.

Jjimjilbang provides various health effects, moving beyond a simple relaxation space.

  • Improvement of blood circulation: Warm heat helps the body’s circulation.
  • Stress relief: It makes the body and mind comfortable.
  • Discharge of waste products: It discharges toxins inside the body through sweat.
  • Muscle relaxation: It relieves fatigue and tension.

Many people visit jjimjilbang to relieve daily stress as well as for their health.

Jjimjilbang: Korea’s Unique Bathhouse Culture

The core of jjimjilbang is sweating in a hot space. At first, it may be difficult because the temperature feels high, but as you get used to it little by little, your body becomes comfortable and your mood actually gets better.

After sweating sufficiently, it is good to go to the bathhouse and wash your body. If you clean up your body with warm water, you become more refreshed and can feel the feeling of fatigue being relieved.

One of the charms of jjimjilbang is entering a hot bulgama (kiln) and then moving to a cold space. The moment of cooling down your body in an ice room or a cool space, after sweating sufficiently in intense heat, gives a special refreshing feeling.

If you have come to a jjimjilbang, you must also enjoy the food. Sweet sikhye, savory baked eggs, and convenient cup ramen are representative snacks. Also, in the restaurant, you can taste traditional Korean meals like jeyuk-bokkeum and kimchi-jjigae. Food eaten after warmly sweating feels even more delicious.

In a jjimjilbang, making and wearing a ‘yang-meori (sheep head)’ with a towel is also a fun experience. It is a simple action, but if you do it together with friends or family, it becomes more enjoyable and a special memory.

Sweating hotly, cooling down coolly, and enjoying delicious food—that is the way to properly enjoy a jjimjilbang.
